PVCC Visual Arts Announces The Power of Plenty Exhibition and Opening Reception

Charlottesville, Va. – January 17, 2024 – The Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) Visual Arts Department will mark the opening of its first gallery exhibition of 2024 with a reception in the PVCC Gallery Friday, January 26, from 5 to 7 p.m. “The Power of Plenty” showcases printmaking with works by a broad sample of artists who use a variety of techniques. Curator and PVCC Adjunct Assistant Professor of Art Jeremy Taylor will be making prints in the gallery as part of the opening, from 5 to 6 p.m. The exhibition will be on display through March 30, 2024.

This exhibition explores the many ways that artists use the medium of printmaking to express their creative vision. From the early Sumerians, who created duplicate images in 3000 BCE by carving symbols into stone and then rolling them onto soft clay tablets, artists have been fascinated by printmaking’s unique ability to produce multiple renditions of the same image.

The Power of Plenty highlights the wide variety of printmaking techniques available today to working artists, including intaglio, etching, silk screen and relief printing. The exhibition will also include an explanation of basic techniques to illuminate what goes on behind the scenes in the artists' studio. The artists whose works are featured are from the Central Virginia region and work on paper, fabric and with books.

The PVCC Gallery is on the third floor of the V. Earl Dickinson Building at the south end of 501 College Drive. Hours are: Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, 1 to 5 p.m.
