Yanir Haim

Major: Computer Science and Economics

Yanir Haim served as the 2020-21 President of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), the leading international honor society for two-year colleges that recognizes students for scholarship, leadership, and fellowship. Yanir, an International student from Ecuador, was also selected as a Top Ten All -Virginia Academic Team member.

Why PVCC: “I was looking for a community college in the US that could give me the opportunities to succeed and that could help me transfer to a four-year university.”

How PVCC helped him reach his goals: “PVCC gave me the opportunity to know exactly what I wanted to pursue in the US. During my first year at PVCC, I pursued the Associates in Engineering degree, but I was not sure if I wanted to go for Computer Engineering or Computer Science. When I took Engineering classes, the professor, Erica Funk, gave me a lot of information and advice about the program and that helped me figure out exactly I wanted to pursue. Later, I joined the Investment club, where I found a new passion that I never thought I had. If I have to say what PVCC gave me, it would be that it opened my eyes to what I want to be."

Future plans: “I plan to transfer to a four-year school and once I graduate from a university, I plan to do a master's in Data Science. I hope with the experience gained during my time at PVCC, I would come back to Ecuador, where I would open a business focused on technology. With this venture, I hope to incentivize the Ecuadorian society to pursue a career in STEM.”
