PVCC Workforce Services Healthcare - Pharmacy Technician
This comprehensive 80-hour program will prepare students to work as a pharmacy technician in a retail or other pharmacy setting and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s PTCB exam. Course content includes pharmacy medical terminology, the history of pharmacy, the pharmacy practice in multiple environments, pharmacy calculations and measurements, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining drugs by generic and brand names. Through classroom lecture and hands on labs, students will review dosage calculations, drug classifications, the “top 200 drugs”, I.V. flow rates, sterile compounding, dose conversions, aseptic technique, the handling of sterile products, total parental nutrition (TPN), dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control and billing and reimbursement. Students who complete this program will also are eligible to sit for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s (PTCB) Exam.
Note: In addition to classroom lecture and labs, this program includes an optional clinical externship through a local pharmacy. To be eligible for a clinical externship, students must successfully complete the 80-hour program, pass the credential exam, submit to a thorough background check, drug screening and meet other requirements.
This fully online, at your own pace, Pharmacy Technician course will prepare you for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) exam. Students must register by June 30, 2020 and can complete the training at their own pace through the end of class on November 19, 2020. Financial Aid assistance available for those who qualify.
Pre-requisites: age 18 or older, no criminal background or substance abuse history, minimum of US High School Diploma and completion of the FREE Pre-healthcare Class.
Employment of pharmacy technicians is projected to grow 7 percent from 2018 to 2028, faster than the average for all occupations. Increased demand for prescription medications will lead to more demand for pharmaceutical services.

What is the pre-healthcare course and why is it required?
It replaces the previously required Information session for enrollment. Students can view a pre-recorded information session, on their own schedule, and upload required admission documents.
It allows students to learn, in a low-pressure environment, more information about our programs, admission requirements and financial assistance while learning to navigate online learning management platform to increase class success should the student desires to register.
- Most common questions are answered during the session and allows students to email the Healthcare team to ask follow-up or case specific questions in a private environment.
