“Thanks to PVCC’s guidance and resources, earning a degree is no longer just a dream — it’s something I’m actively achieving,” shares first-generation student Lance Shelton. With his education fully funded through scholarships, Shelton has had the freedom to make the most of his college experience and he has absolutely seized the opportunity. From participating in a two-week Community College in France Bootcamp to taking part in the Charles T. Baber Leadership Program to serving as a PVCC student representative on the UVA Center for Community Partnerships Advisory Board, he’s embraced every opportunity to grow as a student and a leader.

Q. Why did you choose PVCC?

I chose PVCC because I was born and raised in Nelson County, Virginia, just a stone’s throw from Charlottesville. I’d always known about PVCC, but it wasn’t until I started researching online that I discovered the range of programs and scholarships available to me. As a first-generation, low-income student, college never felt like a realistic option. But I took a leap of faith with PVCC, and they’ve supported me every step of the way. Thanks to their guidance and resources, earning a degree is no longer just a dream, it's something I’m actively achieving.

Q. How has PVCC supported you in reaching your goals?

Whenever I’m asked about PVCC, the first thing I mention is financial aid. As a scholarship recipient, I’ve had the incredible honor of having my education fully funded. That support gave me the freedom to focus on my academics and pursue the success I’ve always dreamed of. But PVCC’s support goes far beyond finances. The community I’ve built, through friendships and faculty support, has shown me that I’m not alone in this journey. The staff genuinely care about student success, and that care is reflected in the encouragement, guidance and belief in me that has been shown.

Q. What is your favorite thing about PVCC?

My favorite thing about PVCC is the diversity of its students. People come from all walks of life, some from out of state and others from countries around the world. Each student’s story is unique and being exposed to so many different perspectives has helped me realize I’m not alone in facing adversity. Every time I walk through the doors at PVCC, I’m reminded that I’m surrounded by people who are working hard to succeed in life, no matter the challenges they’ve faced. That shared determination inspires me every day.

Q. What is one big challenge you faced as a student and how did you overcome it?

One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced at PVCC was failing a class. It was devastating at the time, I felt like I had let myself down. But that moment forced me to confront my own expectations and find the strength to keep going. I leaned on my support system, reassessed my study habits and reminded myself why I started this journey in the first place. That setback didn’t define me, it refined me. It taught me that growth isn’t always linear, and persistence is just as important as achievement. I always tell myself, don’t fear failure, fear never trying.

Q. What organizations or programs have you been a part of at PVCC?

Throughout my time at PVCC, I’ve had the opportunity to participate in a variety of transformative programs, each shaping my academic path and deepening my commitment to my community. One of the most memorable was the Community College in France Bootcamps, a two-week summer initiative in partnership with the French Embassy. This program brought together community college students from across the country to study in France, blending cultural exchange with immersive education. It was a life-changing experience that broadened my perspective and strengthened my passion for education.

I also took part in the Charles T. Baber Leadership Program, which helped me develop essential leadership skills and understand the dynamics of effective teamwork. That experience was a turning point, it sparked my desire to give back and serve the communities that have supported my growth. Most recently, I’ve had the honor of serving as a PVCC student representative on the UVA Center for Community Partnerships Advisory Board. This board ensures that research efforts are community-driven, rooted in the ideas and concerns of local stakeholders, including Charlottesville City Schools, Albemarle County Public Schools, PVCC and Starr Hill Pathways. Together, we work to create meaningful opportunities for youth and foster collaboration across educational institutions.

Q. What are you most proud of during your time at PVCC?

I’m most proud of finding ways to help shape the future of my community. One of the most meaningful moments was attending a meeting with the VCCS Educational Foundation Board, where I saw firsthand that community colleges across Virginia are led by people who genuinely care about students’ success. Their commitment to empowering us, to shape our communities, our lives and even our country, deeply inspired me. It made me reflect on my own journey, the opportunities I’ve been given and the support I’ve received. That experience strengthened my gratitude and fueled my drive to give back and uplift others.
