Program Information
The Associate of Applied Science in Nursing (AAS): LPN to RN Bridge Program for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) is designed to prepare students with a current, unrestricted LPN license in the Commonwealth of Virginia to master entry-level registered nurse knowledge while recognizing their education and skill level as a current LPN. Students will integrate the art of nursing skills with the science of health education to provide holistic client care.
Students who are admitted to the program take “bridge” courses in the first semester and then are eligible to take the second-year nursing courses and graduate within one academic year with an AAS Degree in Nursing.
PROGRAM CURRICULUM
Nursing Student Handbook (Revised October, 2024)
Upon satisfactory completion of this program, the student will be eligible to apply for licensure as a registered nurse (RN) at a State Board of Nursing in the state of their residence and, if deemed eligible by that state, must take and pass the NCLEX-RN licensing exam. Opportunities for the entry-level RN include employment in a myriad of healthcare settings.
Clinical Compliance
All students in this program of study are required to meet clinical compliance requirements as directed by the clinical compliance coordinator. These requirements may include a criminal background check, immunization documentation, drug use screenings, and other standards for on-site clinical training.
Background and drug screenings are not conducted prior to admission. Consult the admission information book or contact the head of the program with inquiries regarding barrier crimes and drug usage regulations.
Admission Requirements
In addition to admission to the college, students must also meet eligibility requirements specific to this program, and only a limited number of students are admitted into a given cohort. If there are more applicants during a cycle than there are available positions in the cohort, eligible applicants will be ranked according to specific criteria and students are admitted or deferred according to that rank.
Please see the Admissions Information Book below for program requirements, minimum eligibility requirements, applicant ranking criteria, and other important information for prospective students.

Requirements for the program are the same regardless of semester of admission.
Acceptance into the AAS LPN to RN Bridge program is selective and competitive. Submission of an application does not guarantee acceptance into the AAS program. Applicants not selected for the program must complete and resubmit a new application packet each year. Applicants for the AAS program are selected once per academic year. Space is limited, and the number of applicants accepted may vary yearly.
Locations for Each Cohort
Students admitted in the Spring or Fall will attend in-person lectures and labs on the main campus in Albemarle County, space permitting. They may also be required to attend in-person lectures or labs at the Giuseppe Center in Greene County.
Information Sessions
Information sessions are provided each application cycle for prospective students. The purpose of these sessions is to help students to decide if this program and profession will be right for them, and to walk students through the application and admissions process. Attendees will also be able to ask the faculty questions about the program and the profession.
Attendance at an information session is strongly encouraged for all students. Refer to the current LPN to RN Bridge Admissions Information Book for information regarding whether your application will be ranked based on attendance.
