PVCC Film and Discussion Installment to Feature The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari with Live Piano Accompaniment
Charlottesville, Va. – October 7, 2024 – The Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) Art Department will host another installment of its “Films Talk Back” series Friday, October 18, at 7:30 p.m. The free screening and discussion will focus on the 1920s silent horror film “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari,” and will feature live piano accompaniment by Matt Marshall, based on the original score.
Marshall, who lectures on film at the University of Virginia and PVCC, will follow up the screening with a question-and-answer session with the audience. Events will take place in the V. Earl Dickinson Building’s Main Stage Theatre.
Chairperson of Visual and Performing Arts Fenella Belle says she chose this film “just in time for Halloween.” The movie tells the story of a strange showman, Dr. Caligari, and a series of murders that occur upon his arrival to a carnival in a small German town.
Belle notes, “The film represents the intersection of Art History and Film – being one of the first films to bring the German Expressionist movement, previously seen in the visual arts and theater, to film. As a result, it gave birth to the psychological thriller and horror genres in film and is a tour de force of Modern painting, architecture, acting, and music.”
Films Talk Back screenings are held the third Friday of the month during the Fine Arts and Performance season and feature a curated selection of films shown on the big screen, paired with a talk by a passionate expert–often the filmmakers themselves. For more information about Films Talk Back, contact Belle at 434.961.5362 or fbelle@pvcc.edu.
The event will be held in the V. Earl Dickinson Building, located at the south end of 501 College Drive on the main campus in Charlottesville. Ample free parking is available in front of the building.
