PVCC Fine Arts and Performance Season to Open with Exhibition Highlighting Local Artists Who Teach and Films Talk Back Series Featuring Filmmaker Horace Scruggs

Charlottesville, Va. – September 16, 2024 – Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) opens its 2024-25 Fine Arts and Performance season Friday, September 20, with two free events that highlight local artists who also share their talents through teaching. From 5 to 7 p.m., a catered reception in the PVCC gallery opens the exhibition “Those Who Teach Can: Practicing Artists Who Teach in Charlottesville City Schools and the PVCC Art Department.” The exhibition will be in place through November 5 in the V. Earl Dickinson Building on the main campus.

Curator Fenella Belle wanted to explore “the incredible talent that lies behind the teaching” in this exhibition. Gathering artwork and media that is as varied as the teachers themselves, the show reveals the creativity of local arts educators who usually spend their days focused on guiding the creative spirit of others.

At 7:30 p.m., local arts educator, filmmaker and multi-instrumentalist Horace Scruggs returns to PVCC to share his insight and knowledge as host of the first screening in the new season of “Films Talk Back.” Academy Award-winning documentary “Summer of Soul” will show on the big screen in the Main Stage Theatre, with a discussion and audience talk back to follow.

Directed by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, the film unearths historical footage from the Harlem Culture Festival that took place during the summer of 1969, shining a spotlight on a significant cultural moment that was overshadowed by the better known “summer of Woodstock.” The movie features performances by Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Mahalia Jackson and many more.

Films Talk Back screenings will be held the third Friday of the month during the Fine Arts and Performance season. This second season of the series will feature a curated selection of documentaries about music, paired with a talk by a passionate expert. The V. Earl Dickinson Building is at the south end of 501 College Drive on the main campus in Charlottesville. Ample free parking is available in front of the building.
