PVCC Establishes Frank Friedman Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning

Charlottesville, Va. – May 5, 2022 – Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) announces the establishment of the Frank Friedman Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, in honor of PVCC President Frank Friedman, who will retire this summer. The new Center will strengthen teaching across the College by connecting faculty with information, resources and best practices that enhance learning. The Center will be a gathering place where faculty and staff share ideas and approaches and work together with colleagues in a collaborative environment to create rich, engaged teaching and learning experiences. Ultimately, the Center will help drive student success.

“There is no better way to thank President Friedman for his decades of service and implausible commitment to PVCC than to invest in the things he is most passionate about – ensuring accessibility to quality education and driving student success,” shared Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Development Harry K. Stillerman.

Creating a Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at PVCC has been a long-term goal of Dr. Friedman’s. In addition to serving as a faculty member and administrator in community colleges since 1977, he earned his doctorate in educational psychology and began his career teaching psychology and education. Throughout his career, he has been committed to the open door philosophy of community colleges and has worked tirelessly and enthusiastically to ensure that PVCC provides the necessary academic rigor, support and encouragement for all students to achieve their educational and career goals.

Funding in the amount of $500,000 to $1 million is needed to support the cost of operations for the Center during its first five years. To make the vision for the Center a reality, the PVCC Educational Foundation has provided a matching challenge in the amount of $100,000. All gifts up to that amount will be matched dollar for dollar.
