Charlottesville, Va. – February 22, 2022 – Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) continues its annual tradition of bringing Richmond Ballet, the state ballet of Virginia, to its Charlottesville audience on Wednesday, March 9, at 7:30 p.m., in the Main Stage Theatre in the V. Earl Dickinson Building. This twenty-fourth year of partnership between the PVCC Fine Arts and Performance division and Richmond Ballet features a full-length program of four diverse works which highlight the versatility, dynamic energy and intense emotion for which the company is known.

The performance will feature the following:

  • A quick burst of classical ballet, “father of American ballet” George Balanchine’s Allegro Brillante captivates audiences from start to finish with its sparkling swiftness and precise execution.
  • From Ben Stevenson, who is known for creating splendor on stage, Three Preludes explores the evolution of a couple’s love in an intimate ballet setting.
  • In an excerpt from English-Canadian choreographer Colin Connor’s Vestiges, two dancers display their undeniable connection, reminiscent of a moth to a flame.
  • Richmond Ballet Associate Artistic Director Ma Cong’s Glare displays the choreographer’s undeniably emotive signature movement set to an extraordinary neo-soul/classical collaboration by musicians David McAlmont and Michael Nyman.

After its founding in 1957, Richmond Ballet became the first professional ballet company in Virginia in 1984 and was designated the state ballet of Virginia in 1990 by then Governor Douglas Wilder. In pursuing its mission “to awaken and uplift the human spirit,” Richmond Ballet has become one of Richmond’s most respected arts and educational institutions and has gained national recognition as one of the country’s premiere touring dance organizations.
