PVCC Fine Arts and Performance to Host Bomba y Plena Orchestra Kadencia with PVCC Pottery Club’s Buns & Buñuelos Fundraiser Kickoff to Benefit Sin Barreras

Charlottesville, Va. – November 8, 2021 – The Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) Fine Arts and Performance division will host a concert of live Afro-Puerto Rican music by Richmond-based “bomba y plena” orchestra Kadencia on Saturday, November 13, at 7:30 p.m. The evening will kick off at 5 p.m. with the PVCC Pottery Club's Buns & Buñuelos pottery sale fundraiser, which benefits Sin Barreras (Without Barriers), a non-profit serving Charlottesville's immigrant Latinx community. Events will take place in the V. Earl Dickinson Building on the PVCC main campus. Masks/face coverings are required to be worn at all times by all attendees while indoors.

The Pottery Club continues its tradition of opening PVCC’s fall celebration of Latinx arts with a fundraiser in the Dickinson commons featuring handmade bowls and something tasty to fill them. From 5 to 7 p.m., and for a $20 donation, Buns & Buñuelos will offer a sweet Mexican fritter dusted with cinnamon to go along with the attendee’s choice of a bowl to take home. Additional buñuelos will be available for purchase with all proceeds benefitting Sin Barreras.

As Buns & Buñuelos concludes, the Main Stage Theatre will open for a celebration of the rhythmic sounds of Puerto Rico with the Kadencia orchestra, whose mission is to “make audiences move in ways they never knew possible.” Bomba y plena are percussion-driven musical traditions hailing from Puerto Rico and rooted in Africa. Band leader and island native Maurice Sanabria-Ortiz, backed by an orchestra of professional musicians that includes his son, unleashes a hearty brass section and nearly every type of percussion instrument imaginable in his mission to preserve and share his home’s native musical expressions.

Tickets to the Kadencia concert are available at $15 for adults and $12 for seniors and students. Patrons are encouraged to purchase advance tickets at www.pvcc.edu/performingarts or by calling the PVCC Box Office at 434.961.5376 (major credit cards accepted). The PVCC Cashier’s Office, located in the Main Building, will also have tickets available for purchase during normal business hours.
