Charlottesville, Va. – September 27, 2021 – The Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) Fine Arts and Performance division will host playwright and actor Lucinda McDermott for a performance of her newly revised play celebrating the life of artist Georgia O’Keeffe. “O’Keeffe!” will take place Saturday, October 9, at 7:30 p.m., in the Main Stage Theatre. The theatre is located in the V. Earl Dickinson Building on the PVCC main campus in Charlottesville. Masks are required to be worn at all times by all attendees.

Sensual, vulnerable, womanly...the play explores the gendered perception of O’Keeffe and her work that followed her to the grave. Having been revived from the dead to reclaim her legacy, O’Keeffe tries to set some things straight: Was it love or was it grooming? Was it O’Keeffe or was it husband Alfred Stieglitz? As her relationship with the domineering photographer explodes, so does her identity as the press, the world and Stieglitz all try to lay claim.

“O’Keeffe!” premiered Off-Broadway in 1992 with McDermott in the title role. Since then, she has toured the work throughout the U.S. to universities, theatres, arts centers and museums. She performed the play alongside an O’Keeffe exhibit in Bermuda and at the San Miguel International Writer’s Conference in Mexico. The play is published through Playscripts, Inc. and has been performed by other actors throughout the world.

McDermott is a touring artist with the Virginia Commission of the Arts (VCA), an elite roster of curated touring performances within the Commonwealth. She is also a teaching artist for VCA, facilitating workshops in acting and playwriting. McDermott’s performances have taken her from Off-Broadway to London’s West End. She has worked in film, television, in numerous commercials and voice-overs.

As a playwright her many plays have been produced in theatres and universities nationally including Primary Stages, William Redfield Theatre, WomenKind Festival in New York City, Center for Sacred Story in Los Angeles, Barter Theatre, Birmingham Children’s Theatre, Theatre of Albany in Georgia, University of Wisconsin and many more. McDermott has written, directed, devised and collaborated on original scripts for Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Hampton History Museum, The Chrysler Museum of Fine Arts, Mill Mountain Theatre and more. She holds an MFA in Playwriting from the University of Virginia and a BFA in acting from Virginia Commonwealth University.
