PVCC Announces Online Richmond Ballet Event Featuring Swan Lake

Charlottesville, Va. – March 11 , 2021 – Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) will continue its annual tradition of bringing Richmond Ballet, the state ballet of Virginia, to its Charlottesville audience. This twenty-third year of partnership between the PVCC Fine Arts and Performance division and Richmond Ballet will take place online only and features a performance of the iconic ballet “Swan Lake.” The full-length work will be available for viewing from March 28 through April 4, accessible through a link at www.pvcc.edu/performingarts for only $4 per household.

Regarded by many as the pinnacle of classical ballet for its lush, dynamic Tchaikovsky score, intensity of emotion and virtuosic dancing, Swan Lake has captivated audiences for over 125 years with its timeless tale of the struggle between good and evil. In the story, Prince Siegfried, a spirited hunter, receives a crossbow for his 21st birthday. He and his hunting companions take to the woods, where the Prince encounters a beautiful swan. At nightfall, the swan evolves into Odette, the Swan Queen, who captures his heart. However, an evil sorcerer, Von Rothbart, comes between them.

Richmond Ballet’s production descends from the 1895 staging of the ballet by famed French choreographer Marius Petipa. The work was set on the company by Nicholas ‘Papa’ Beriozoff, who learned the version directly from a student of Petipa.

After its founding in 1957, Richmond Ballet became the first professional ballet company in Virginia in 1984 and was designated the state ballet of Virginia in 1990 by then Governor Douglas Wilder. In pursuing its mission “to awaken and uplift the human spirit,” Richmond Ballet has become one of Richmond’s most respected arts and educational institutions and has gained national recognition as one of the country’s premiere touring dance organizations.

Richmond Ballet’s performance is made possible in part by a grant from the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts with additional support from the Watterson Foundation.
