PVCC Named One of America’s Best Colleges for Student Voting
Charlottesville, Va. – September 2, 2020 – Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) has once again earned a spot on the roster of “America’s Best Colleges for Student Voting,” in the respective category of Washington Monthly’s annual College Guide and Rankings. Touted as schools “doing the most to turn students into citizens,” the list includes 157 institutions of higher education, which is 18 more schools than made the previous honor roll, released in February, and almost double the number that made the honor roll released last year, according to the report. PVCC is one of only four Virginia-based schools in the ranking; the only community college in Virginia to make the list; and one of only eight total community colleges listed nationwide.
“A college education should be about more than preparation for a career. It should prepare students to be informed and engaged citizens in our democracy. The Washington Monthly honor roll recognizes only 10% of the colleges and 1% of the community colleges in our nation for getting students to vote. PVCC's presence on this list once again demonstrates the profound impact of our dedicated and talented faculty and staff,” stated PVCC President Frank Friedman.
PVCC regularly receives national recognition from the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge and was recently designated a Voter Friendly Campus for its efforts to increase voter engagement and registration among students. Current and upcoming civic activities at PVCC include nonpartisan voter registration drives and voting awareness events.
