Piedmont Virginia Community College’s Theatre Department will present a folk-pop musical adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” from Thursday, Nov. 29, through Sunday, Dec. 2, 2018, in the Main Stage Theatre in the V. Earl Dickinson Building on PVCC’s Main Campus in Charlottesville.
Named one of the New York Times’ “Best Shows of 2017,” the play is one of the most light-hearted of all Shakespeare’s comedies. The dream-like tale is played out in the Forest of Arden, a fantastical place where all are welcomed into a community hidden amidst the trees and under the stars.
The work was adapted with a new generation in mind by acclaimed songwriter Shaina Taub and director Laurie Woolery. “From the earliest moments of collaboration, we wanted to honor Shakespeare’s artistic impulse and create a piece that speaks to the current world we live in,” said Woolery.
Assistant Professor of Theatre Arts Brad Stoller pairs with musical director Shelley Cole, PVCC student actors and professionals from the community to bring the production to the stage. The performance will feature a live band and dance pieces inspired by diverse cultures including African, Indian “Bollywood” dance and belly dance.
Show times are 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29, Friday, Nov. 30, and Saturday, Dec. 1. A matinee performance will take place on Sunday, Dec. 2, at 2:30 p.m.
General seating ticket prices are $10 for adults and $6 for seniors and students. Tickets are available for purchase online at www.pvcc.edu/performingarts, by calling the PVCC Box Office at 434.961.5376 (major credit cards accepted), or by visiting Greenberry’s Coffee (Barracks Road Shopping Center) or the PVCC Cashier’s Office during normal business hours.
