Latin Ballet of Virginia performance of “NuYoRican” comes to PVCC
As part of its 2018-19 Fine Arts and Performance season, Piedmont Virginia Community College will host the Latin Ballet of Virginia for a performance of “NuYoRican” on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 7:30 p.m., in the Main Stage Theatre in the V. Earl Dickinson Building on PVCC’s Main Campus in Charlottesville.
NuYoRican – a moniker created by combining the words “New York” and “Puerto Rican” – is a multi-media dance theatre work that weaves together common threads in the lives of Puerto Rican migrants to New York City in the 1940s. Based on historical facts and first-hand accounts by Puerto Rican authors, the production touches on the shaping of a new culture in a foreign land as the next, American-born generations straddle the line between two very different cultural identities. NuYoRican captures the essence of Puerto Rico’s vibrant cultural expressions with mambos, salsas, Latin jazz and reggaeton, while honoring the island’s blend of Spanish and African roots with historical, percussion-driven dances like “la plena” and “la bomba.”
An award-winning professional dance company and school of dance based in Richmond, the Latin Ballet of Virginia is known for its technical excellence, depth of emotion and uniquely theatrical presentations that feature richly detailed costuming and video projections. Under the artistic direction of Columbia-born founder Ana Ines King, the ballet combines contemporary dance with the classic forms they perform, resulting in performances that are accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds.
