NEW SECURITY PRECAUTIONS AT JPJ
The John Paul Jones Arena has new security precautions, which will impact entry and arrival time. Both graduates and attendees are encouraged to arrive early. Graduates need to be on-site by 4:30 and attendees/guests should plan to arrive at least 45 minutes in advance of the 6 p.m. start time. WHERE DO I PICK UP MY CAP & GOWN?
Caps and gowns should be picked up from the PVCC Bookstore, and there is no charge to graduates. It is not necessary to order these.
WHAT ARE HONOR CORDS & HOW DO I GET THEM?
Gold honor cords are awarded to all students who have earned the Cum Laude (3.2 GPA), Magna Cum Laude (3.5 GPA) or Summa Cum Laude (3.8 GPA) distinction. Because of time restraints with final grades, this cumulative GPA does not include the grades earned in the final spring semester prior to graduation. The honor cords will be distributed to those students being honored on graduation night before the ceremony. This tradition enables us to single out in a special way those students who excelled through hard work and perseverance. Honor cords are given only to students being awarded a certificate or two-year degree. Career studies certificate awardees are not eligible for an honor cord.
WHERE DO I PICK UP MY GRADUATION ANNOUNCEMENTS?
PVCC provides each graduate with 10 free graduation announcements available from PVCC's Cashier's Office located in room M237 in the Main Building. Additional announcements may be purchased for a nominal fee.
WHAT IS THE GRAD CAP PHOTO CONTEST? CAN ANY GRADUATE PARTICIPATE?
PVCC is holding a photo contest for graduates from Saturday, May 5 - Friday, May 11. Students who wish to decorate their graduation caps can share photos of their caps on social media and be entered to win prizes. First place is a $40 Amazon gift card. WHAT TIME SHOULD I ARRIVE AT THE JOHN PAUL JONES ARENA?
Graduates need to check in by 4:30 p.m. at JPJ. Please do not bring personal belongings with you. There is no storage space available. Cell phones must be turned off during the line-up procedure. For directions or a parking map, visit www.johnpauljonesarena.com/directions.asp.
WILL MY PICTURE BE TAKEN?
Yes, professional photographers will be on-site to capture graduate photos. Each graduate will have a photo taken in front of the blue PVCC banner after they exit the stage.
HOW DO I PURCHASE MY PHOTOS?
A free color proof will be sent to your current mailing address, which includes a password for online viewing. Please make sure your mailing address in the PVCC system is current. Log-in to MyPVCC at www.pvcc.edu/mypvcc to confirm. You are under no obligation to purchase prints. To receive an email notification the moment your photos are online, please visit www.photospecialties.com to pre-register. If you do not receive a proof within a week of the ceremony, please contact email@example.com or call 1.800.722.7033.
WHEN WILL I GET MY DIPLOMA?
PVCC orders student diplomas approximately one month after the commencement ceremony. You will receive your diploma by mail 8-10 weeks after it has been ordered. Diplomas will be mailed to the address indicated on the Graduation Application. If your address changes, please notify Jeannie Perutelli at firstname.lastname@example.org.
INFORMATION FOR PARENTS, FRIENDS & FAMILY
WHEN SHOULD I ARRIVE?
The ceremony begins at 6 p.m. Early arrival is encouraged, as there are new security measures at the John Paul Jones Arena. All guests should plan to arrive at least 45 minutes in advance so that they have time to get through security before the start of the ceremony. Attendees are advised to wear as little metal as possible. Large metal jewelry/belt buckles, etc., are allowed but can slow down the entry process. All bags are subject to search.
WHERE SHOULD I PARK?
Parking for the John Paul Jones Arena is located immediately in front and adjacent to the building (parking lots and parking garage). Handicapped parking is also available. For directions or a parking map, visit www.johnpauljonesarena.com/directions.asp.
CAN I BRING FOOD OR SNACKS?
No, the John Paul Jones Arena does not allow outside food. JPJ concessions will be available for light snacks and beverages from 12:30 p.m. until 6 p.m.
ARE ANY ITEMS PROHIBITED AT JPJ?
Yes, due to new security precautions, JPJ prohibits several items inside the arena including the following:
- Wrapped gifts
- Artificial noise makers
- Various types of bags including:
- Fanny packs
- Cinch or drawstring bags
- Binocular cases
- Diaper bags
- Computer bags
- Camera bags
- Backpacks (including clear)
- Tinted plastic bags
These items will need to remain in your vehicle.
*Clutch purses are permitted if they do not exceed 4.5"x6.5" or 6.5"x4.5"
WHAT BAGS CAN I BRING INSIDE THE ARENA?
- One-gallon clear plastic zipper bags (similar to what you would take on an airplane)
- Clear plastic bags with handles as long as the bag does not exceed 6"x12" or 12"x6"
- Clutch purses that do not exceed 4.5"x6.5" or 6.5"x4.5"
CAN I TAKE PICTURES?
Yes, families and friends are welcome to take pictures of their graduate at the event. Professional photographers will also be on-site to capture photos of the graduates when they exit the stage.
WHERE CAN I GET COPIES OF THE PROFESSIONAL PHOTOS TAKEN AT GRADUATION?
A free color proof will be sent to the graduate's current mailing address, which includes a password for online viewing. Please make sure your graduate has added his or her correct mailing address in the PVCC system. There is no obligation to purchase prints. Graduates can request to receive an email notification the moment their photos are online by visiting www.photospecialties.com to pre-register. If graduates do not receive a proof within a week of the ceremony, they should contact email@example.com or call 1.800.722.7033.
WILL SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETERS BE AVAILABLE?
Yes, sign language interpreters will be on-site for both the Nurses Pinning at 1 p.m. and the Commencement Ceremony at 6 p.m. Individuals needing this service may sit in section 105.
WILL FLOWERS BE AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE ON-SITE?
Yes, flowers will be available for purchase at the arena. Customers can choose from a wide variety of colors, sizes, and presentation styles. To browse the selection or to pre-order, please visit www.thecommencementgroup.com/piedmontvirginiacc. Purchases can also be made on-site the day of graduation. Payments of cash, debit cards, and major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express) will be accepted.
Please note that only small floral arrangements in clear, cellophane wrapping are permitted in the JPJ arena.
