Free PVCC Events Celebrate Dalai Lama Visit

Charlottesville, VA - Piedmont Virginia Community College will host several events on campus in celebration of the Dalai Lama's visit to Charlottesville in October. These events are free and open to the public:

Monday, Oct. 8, 12:30 p.m.
Three Weeks in Tibet
Room M227 (Auditorium) in the Main Building
Valerie Palamountain, dean of PVCC Workforce Services, will present a photo talk of a three-week visit to Tibet to promote economic self-sufficiency among Tibetans.

Tuesday, Oct. 9, 7 p.m.
Dalai Lama's Compassionate Life and Teachings
Main Stage Theatre, V. Earl Dickinson Building
Dr. Karen C. Lang, professor of religious studies at the University of Virginia, will discuss the Dalai Lama tradition and the life and teachings of the present Dalai Lama.

Wednesday, Oct. 10, 12:30 p.m.
History and Culture of Tibet
Room M227 (Auditorium) in the Main Building
Kurtis Schaeffer, professor and chair of the U.Va. department of religious studies, speaks on the history and culture of Tibet.

Wednesday, Oct. 10, 7 p.m.
A Westerner's Effort to Appreciate the Dalai Lama on Freedom, Self and the Mind
Main Stage Theatre, V. Earl Dickinson Building
John Gulley, PVCC associate professor of philosophy, draws from the record of the Dalai Lama's thinking on core philosophical issues of Western metaphysics.

Friday, Oct. 12, 7:30 p.m.
Screening of the movie Seven Years in Tibet
Main Stage Theatre, V. Earl Dickinson Building
Seven Years in Tibet is the true story of Heinrich Harrer, an Austrian mountain climber who became friends with the Dalai Lama at the time of China's takeover of Tibet. This 1997 film stars Brad Pitt, David Thewlis and BD Wong.

PVCC is located at 501 College Drive off state Route 20. Take Exit 121 from Interstate 64, and follow the signs to the College.
