Hybrid Courses FAQs

Hybrid classes give you the best of both worlds: in-person learning and online flexibility. Attend scheduled classes on campus for hands-on, interactive learning, and complete portions of your coursework online—on your own schedule or through live virtual sessions. Hybrid classes combine scheduled on-campus meetings with online learning, offering flexibility and support. You will attend in-person sessions for hands-on, interactive learning and complete the rest of your work online — either on your own time or in live virtual sessions. Find your hybrid classes.

What is a hybrid course?

In a hybrid course, students complete a portion of their coursework online via Canvas, including discussion boards, exams, readings, videos and other activities while attending regularly scheduled in-person class sessions for interactive and applied learning experiences.

Which classes are offered in hybrid format?

Hybrid course options are available for most of PVCC’s programs and are often 7-weeks long.

What happens during the online portion of the class?

Online work is class time, not homework. The online activities replace the class sessions you do not spend on campus. Online activities have deadlines, are graded, and they count as instruction. You will have homework as well.

What does hybrid class look like each week?

For a 3-credit hybrid course, you will attend class in person once or twice each week during a term session. For example, a 15-week course that traditionally meets twice a week will require you to attend in-person once for 75 minutes each week for the whole term; for a 7-week class, the amount of in-person class time doubles each week. The rest of your instruction time is online.

What is an example schedule?

Tuesday: On campus class at your scheduled time: for example, 8 a.m. to 9:15 a.m., every week for the term.

Online: On Canvas, recorded lectures, discussions, and self-paced work, due on set dates.

All week: Homework, readings, and assignments, the same as any college course (approximately 6 hours of time for a 3-credit class).

Is a hybrid class right for you?

Hybrid classes will work well for you if you:

  • Enjoy the structure and support of working in-person with your instructor and classmates but need flexibility.
  • Can meet deadlines without reminders.
  • Need fewer trips to campus for work or family reasons, and have reliable internet.

How can I be successful in hybrid classes?

  1. Go to every in-person class
    • Attend all in-person class sessions. These sessions offer hands-on learning and engagement that cannot be replicated online.
  2. Open Canvas every day
    • Log into Canvas daily and complete online activities on time.
  3. Block time on your calendar
    • Treat the online half like a class you have to show up for.
  4. Ask questions
    • Use class time to clarify expectations. Online, post questions and email your instructor.

How do I know a course is hybrid when I register?

Check the instructional method listed with each section when you register. A hybrid section lists both a campus meeting time and online work, and the section number will include an “H”: for example, SOC 200 H01.
