CHEC Logo The Community Homeschool Enrichment Center (CHEC) supports homeschool families by offering a variety of enrichment courses for children age 5 to 18. Courses were solely enrichment when CHEC formed in 2005, but over time we have started to offer a variety of academic options as well. We strive to offer classes that are fun, educational, and social.

 

KidsCollege Instructor Bios

Deborah Ashby Deborah Ashby is a Career Coach at Charlottesville High School. This is her 8th year working at PVCC. During the school year, MS. Ashby plans field trips to career fairs, coordinates the Dual Enrollment program, and assists students with college and career research. In the summer, she works as an academic adviser at PVCC helping recently graduated high school students transition to college. She also teaches SDV 100 for the STEM in Motion
Summer Bridge program.

Jasmine Azimi is a third grade teacher at Cale Elementary and has taught in Albemarle County for four years. Before moving to Charlottesville, she taught in Fairfax county. She particularly love to use technology, especially exploring the world of coding.

John Haverkamp

John Haverkamp is skilled in a wide range of artisanal crafts and in various

Shari Taylor-Lascano

Shari Taylor- Lascano is a Fluvanna County Public School teacher with over 12 years teaching experience.

Becki Moore Becki Moore (BFA /VCU) developed the Art and 3D program at the Covenant School and taught there for 22 years. She has taught songwriting, musical performance, pottery, stained glass, basketry, weaving, batiking, mosaics and many other handcrafts along with drawing and painting classes.

Michael Moore Michael D. Moore is an award winning graphic designer and illustrator from VCU who has designed everything from logos, magazines, annual reports, large exhibits and a VA state license plate. He also managed and published a cartoon book which evolved into the weekly cartoon strip.

Theresa Osani Theresa Osani has been teaching English and Special Education for 20 years in 1st - 6th grade and has been teaching in Fluvanna County for 13 years. She began her teaching career in New York. Before she became a teacher, she worked in broadcasting, launching the network, MSNBC.  She believes the best way to become a better reader and writer is to read & write more. Blended learning of literacy and technology are passions of hers.

Caitlin Poole Caitlin Poole is the Talent Development and Gifted Services teacher
at Crozet Elementary School. She has previously taught 3rd and 5th
grade in Fairfax County, VA as well as English in Thailand. She loves
helping kids find their passions, reading, and solving puzzles.

Patrick Scharf Patrick Scharf has been teaching children for 11  eleven years and adults for seventeen. He is the father of three adult boys. He is passionate about whatever subject he engages with. He combines his background as a rehabilitation engineer and biology to present unique ideas and fun ways to learn. His humor adds to the fun, making time fly. His projects with food and with repurposing disposables are both fun and functional.

Louis Torkornoo

Louis Torkornoo is originally from Ghana, Africa but has lived in the U.S. for 23 years. He is an alumnus of the University of Virginia where he began in engineering but graduated with a masters in math education.  He has taught middle school students in Algebra 1 and pre-algebra. He has also served as a math tutor, karate instructor, guitar and piano teacher, soccer coach, Sunday school teacher, christmas pageant coordinator, computer coach, SAT math and college prep instructor, summer camp counselor and talent show coach.

Teela James is an educator who specializes in teaching interdisciplinary topics to small groups. She has degrees in computer science and landscape architecture and her diverse career path has included teaching, programming, technical training, writing, designing parks and guiding wilderness camping trips. She loves games and finds high interest games like Magic and Dungeons and Dragons create opportunities to engage students, enhance teamwork skills and inspire creativity.

Ruei Jen Abraham-Fan

Ruei-Jen Abraham-Fan

Ruei-Jen Abraham-Fan is an enthusiastic learner, from genomics, to neurobiology, to even raising children. She believes that anyone can learn anything as long as time and effort are invested in any venture. She has been an educator for over ten years. Currently, she is a Lab manager in a Neuroscience/Genomic lab. She has a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology and Ph.D in Neurobiology. She has worked with children of various ages and has taught science-based classes as well as experience-based classes.

  Christina Rizzo has been in the foodservice industry for 15 years and has run a catering business since she graduated high school. Christina has worked in the kitchen for several local nonprofits such as the Salvation Army, Region 10, and The Piedmont House and has been in charge of Soup Kitchens at First United Methodist Church for the past 12 years and has most recently been the Culinary Arts Teaching Assistant at CATEC.

Rita Lysher

Rita Lyhser has been a high school Biology and Chemistry teacher for more than 25 years. She began her career as a middle school science teacher and has taught many summer enrichment programs for middle school students. She has been sewing her whole life and using embroidery machines and Cricut cutting machines for the last five years.

Yumeca Webb-Jordan is a career and technical education high school teacher who specializes in marketing, fashion marketing, and economics and personal finance.  Yumeca received her Bachelor's degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and earned a Masters in Educational Leadership from Liberty University. She has been an educator for over 14 years.
