The next Films Talk Back in the 2024-25 series is "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" featuring live piano accompaniment by Matt Marshall, based on the original score. Marshall, who lectures on the subject of film at UVA and PVCC, will follow up the screening with a question and answer session with the audience.

Just in time for Halloween, "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" is a silent film made in 1920 telling the story of a strange showman, Dr. Caligari, and a series of murders that occur upon his arrival with a carnival in a small German town. The film represents the intersection of Art History and Film – being one of the first films to bring the German Expressionist movement, previously seen in the visual arts and theater, to film. As a result, it gave birth to the psychological thriller and horror genres in film and is a tour de force of Modern painting, architecture, acting, and music.

Join PVCC for Films Talk Back on the third Friday of the month for popular and critically acclaimed documentaries, shown on the big screen and paired with a talk by a passionate expert–often the filmmakers themselves. Please note, no food or drink is allowed in the theatre.
