Faculty and Staff Update

May 12, 2020

Dear PVCC Faculty and Staff:

We have made it to the end of the most unique semester any of us could ever have imagined. Who would have thought that when you left campus for spring break you would not return the rest of the semester? Who could have predicted that the most common words we could utter and read for more than 2 months would be pandemic, telework, ZOOM, and social distancing?

To be successful, one must adapt. This goes for people as well as for a college. We have adapted and we will continue to adapt. Thanks to you, most of our students have successfully completed Spring Semester. So far, almost 1,500 have registered for summer and plans for the fall have been developed assuming two different scenarios; face-to-face and online. Thanks to your resilience and your dedication, PVCC will be there when our students and our community needs us. We will be there to help individuals complete their education, launch their careers, and become the informed and engaged citizens needed in a successful democracy. The pandemic creates new challenges, but you have found new ways to do what PVCC has done for almost 50 years; provide access to high quality higher education for all who can benefit and to create a caring and supportive environment to help students succeed. And you have done it under the most challenging circumstances.

When I was a kid, my heroes were Superman, Batman, James Bond, and a bunch of baseball players. Today, my heroes are doctors, nurses, first responders, scientists, journalists, teachers, and all who demonstrate leadership and compassion to unite us and help us get through what might be the greatest challenge in our lifetime. Today, you are my heroes. More importantly, you are heroes to thousands of students. They won’t all say thank you and you might never get a medal to pin on your chest, but never doubt for a moment that your work is so greatly appreciated.

I don’t know when we will be able to see each other again live rather than on ZOOM. I look forward to that day. Until then, stay safe, stay healthy, and thank you.

Frank
