Caring Campus
The Caring Campus Initiative, developed by the Institute for Evidence-Based Change (IEBC) is designed to create a college environment that increases students’ sense of connectedness and belonging and, in turn, completion of each student’s education goals.
PVCC Cares

The Piedmont Virginia Community College Caring Campus Initiative "PVCC Cares" engages employees to create a campus environment that ensures they are deeply involved in student success initiatives. It is particularly important for all students and staff to feel welcome and that they belong at PVCC.
Commitments
- Ten Foot Rule: Greet one another in a positive manner and make all PVCC community members feel comfortable. Be fully present, involved, accessible and approachable.
- Name Badges: Wear name badges to make introductions easier and more personal, and to help students identify who to approach with questions.
- Cross-Departmental Awareness: Learn about other departments in order to better assist newcomers, students and visitors. Maintain accurate and up to date detailed directories.
- Warm Referrals: Call ahead or walk students to the office they need to get to. Follow up to ensure the student gets there. Making connections on students’ behalf.
- First Week Greetings: During the first week of classes set up information tables, meet students in the parking lot, welcome students to PVCC. Eliminate barriers by clarifying practices.
Why Caring Campus
- Students who feel connected to their college are more likely to be successful each semester and more likely to achieve their educational goals.
- Providing an environment where a student feels genuinely welcome and genuinely cared about creates change that can positively impact inequities.
- It is critical that we are consistent and intentional in our commitments across the College and that we foster a culture of caring.
- From the first impression to daily experiences, it is important that students and employees are not just told that they are valued – but they feel valued and connected.
