HMS 160 Survey of Mental Health Service in Virginia (3 cr, Sp)
Presents an overview of public mental health services in Virginia, current funding and legislative issues in Virginia mental health, the consumer movement and models of consumer operated services, and current principles and models of psychiatric rehabilitation.
Lecture 3 hours per week.
HMS 161 Professional Skill Development for Human Services (3 cr, Sp)
Teaches professional skills necessary to make the transition from the role of MH consumer/client to that of services provider. Covers confidentiality, professionalism, boundaries and roles, cultural diversity and personal values.
Lecture 3 hours per week.
HMS 162 Communication Skills for Human Services Professionals (3 cr, Sp)
Covers basic written and verbal communication skills, including, listening skills, interviewing techniques, and completing written documentation to professional standards.
Lecture 3 hours per week.
HMS 250 Principles of Case Management (3 cr, Sp)
Provides an overview of current case management theory and practice in the field of mental health.
Lecture 3 hours per week.
HMS 280 Understanding Serious Mental Illness (3 cr, Sp)
Provides an overview of current information about serious and persistent mental illnesses and their treatment. Includes a particular focus on relapse prevention and recovery.
Lecture 3 hours per week.
HMS 290 Coordinated Internship in Human Services or Child Care (3 cr, Su)
Supervised on-the-job training in selected business, industrial, service firms, or child-care centers coordinated by the College. Credit/practice ratio maximum 1-5 hours. May be repeated for credit.
Prerequisite: HMS 280.
