Charlottesville, VA -Applications are now being accepted for a new program for GED graduates interested in continuing their education at Piedmont Virginia Community College.
PVCC's Emerging Scholars program will provide 15 students with a scholarship for two classes during the spring 2014 semester, a partial textbook voucher, one-on-one academic coaching, financial aid counseling, tutoring and more.
"College can be intimidating, especially for many GED graduates," said Lynda Smethurst, PVCC adult career coach. "The Emerging Scholars program is a chance for them to take their first two college classes with other GED graduates, receive advising and support and learn key skills to help them succeed academically. The environment will help ease their concerns and ensure they have a successful transition to college."
The Emerging Scholars program classes begin Jan. 13 and end May 12. Classes meet Wednesday evenings from 6-9:45 p.m. at the PVCC Jefferson School Center, 233 Fourth Street NW, Charlottesville.
Applications for the PVCC Emerging Scholars program are being accepted now and will be considered until all scholarship funds have been awarded or until Jan. 10, 2014. Applications are available at www.pvcc.edu/emergingscholar or at the following locations in Charlottesville:
• PVCC Main Campus, Admissions & Advising Center, 501 College Drive
