PVCC was among the top-10 mid-sized community colleges (5,000-10,000 students) across the U.S. that offer exceptional technology support to students and educators. Colleges from 26 states participated in the 2012 Digital Community Colleges Survey. This is the third year that PVCC has placed among the top 10 and the first year the College competed in the mid-sized category against much larger institutions and improved its ranking from previous years.
The survey addressed multiple areas in digital technology including use of mobile devices and technology integration into class curriculum; strategic planning and data management; and delivery models and professional development.
In addition to PVCC's electronic classrooms and campus-wide wireless Internet access, the College consolidated its network servers through virtualization, resulting in significant increases in computing efficiency and the network's overall versatility. PVCC also introduced a green initiative in 2012 that resulted in an 80 percent reduction in the power requirements of equipment in its computer labs. Classrooms at PVCC and its new Eugene Giuseppe Center in Greene County are equipped with compressed video systems, which allow students to view live video of lectures at either location and at other remote locations. Students can also download complete recordings of class lectures and presentations for study and review.
Piedmont Virginia Community College is a state-supported, nonresidential two-year college. As part of the Virginia Community College System, PVCC serves the City of Charlottesville and the counties of Albemarle, Buckingham, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson. Since the College opened in 1972, more than 200,000 students have taken classes, and the College has awarded more than 10,700 associate degrees and certificates.
