Library Instruction
The mission of the library's instructional sessions is to provide faculty and students with the skills necessary to become information literate. The library works to align the instructional content with the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education created by the Association of College and Research Libraries. We encourage all instructors and students to become more information literate because "information literacy forms the basis for lifelong learning. It is common to all disciplines, to all learning environments, and to all levels of education." (American Library Association)

We can tailor a class to meet your needs. To request library instruction for your classes, please use this online form. Requests for library instruction should be made 48 hours in advance; you will receive an e-mail confirmation. Please call us at 434.961.5309 or e-mail reference@pvcc.edu for more information.

Embedded librarians work closely with faculty through Blackboard to deliver library and information literacy instruction. Learn how to use the service with this online presentation.

Online Resources
MERLOT. A peer-reviewed collection of teaching materials. See the MERLOT tutorial about using this online resource.

Project Muse. A database with more than 300 full-text journals covering a wide range of topics, including literature, social science and theatre. See the Project Muse tutorial below for more information about using this database.

Purchase Requests
All book or media purchases by faculty using division funds must be ordered by Technical Services and require the approval of the appropriate dean. Library requests may be submitted via e-mail, publishers' flyers, publishers' catalogs or written request. Use a highlighter to mark items when submitting catalogs or flyers. If submitting a request via e-mail, please include author, title, ISBN, format and price. Books and media materials are catalogued in the order they are received. If you need to borrow a title before it has been catalogued, please see the Technical Services Supervisor in Room 701 in the library.

Reserve
Faculty members may place books, folders and videos on reserve for their classes. Bring reserve materials to the circulation desk. You may select one of the following loan periods:

  • In library use
  • Overnight
  • Two days
  • One week

Shipping (UPS) Support
The library can ship work-related items via UPS on your behalf. For same day shipment, bring items to the library by 2:00 p.m. Package, address and include any necessary insurance forms for all items.
