Printing Tip

"Printing in Computer Lab 832 and Library"

The printing system in the Computing Lab 832 (and Jessup Library) is a combination Copier/Printer provided by Xerox.  The cost is 5¢ per page.

The basics steps in printing are as follows:

1)  Send your print job to the printer using the default printer on your computer.  This should be the Xerox DocuCenter 420.  This prints black and white only.

2)  Note your computer number before you go to the printer.  You will use this to find your print job from the job list on the printer.

3)  To activate the printer, you will need to insert money or a copy card (available via a vending machine in the Computing Lab and Library) sufficient in value to complete the job.  If you use a copy card, you may add money to it at any time, up to $20

4)  The list of printer jobs should be displayed on the touch panel of the printer.  It is best to scroll to the BOTTOM of the list, and look for your print job, since most recent jobs are listed last.  Your print job should be identified by your machine number.  Press the line with your print job.  You should see a detail of your job, and a "release" soft-button on the screen.  Press this release button and your job should print.  When finished, you can get remaining change from the money/copy card counter by pressing the change plunger or the white button on the card reader.

Office Tip

"Office 2007 / 2003 Compatibility"

Now that Office 2007 is available, users of Office 2003 may experience difficulty opening files created in the new version.  If you find compatibility of document formats is an issue, try the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats download from Microsoft.  Read the overview and details from the page to ensure that this software is right for your computer.  This product provides the necessary converters to allow many Office 2007 documents to be read with Office 2003.

Vista / Office 2007 Rollout

Microsoft Vista (Business) and Office 2007 are the newest additions in select classrooms.  Here are the rooms that have new Vista installations:

Labs 834, 829, 832-E, and Grove Street 104 are now converted to Microsoft Vista and Office 2007.

Labs 154 and 822 have removable drive sets which offer Microsoft Vista and Office 2007.  The rooms still have drive sets with traditional software.

Lab 823 has Office 2007 added.  (This lab still operates under Windows XP, to accommodate our current CADD software.)

The Open Computing Lab in 832 has been split, with a bank of new computers added with Vista and Office 2007 capabilities.  To maintain compatibility with other labs, there is still a bank of computers with Windows XP and Office 2003.

In addition to the PC computing Labs, the Physics Lab in room 830 has received six new Vista PCs for use in lab work.
