Piedmont Virginia Community College Wireless Network
Wireless Network Access Instructions

Piedmont Virginia Community College is happy to announce that we are now providing open access to our wireless network throughout our campus buildings as well as in select outdoor areas adjacent to our main facilities.

Faculty, staff and administrators are strongly encouraged to contact the IT helpdesk for proper security setup on their wireless computers.
 

Requirements Your computer must be wireless ready in order for you to use the wireless network on the PVCC campus. In the event that your computer is not equipped with wireless capability, you can purchase a wireless network card for your PC, Macintosh or handheld device and insert it in the correct port in your device. The card must conform to IEEE Standard 802.11b or 802.11g. Wireless Ethernet cards are available from any local computer store or online.
Once your computer is equipped and configured with a wireless network card, follow these instructions to connect to the PVCC wireless network.


Setup / How to Connect to PVCC Wireless Network
  1. To access the wireless network, users will need to establish a wireless network connection. You will need to be on campus, inside the range of our wireless system to complete the next steps. The steps are illustrated for Windows XP. You may need to adapt the steps if you have another operating system or special software for your wireless Ethernet card.
     
  2. From the Windows taskbar go to: “Start” >>> “Control Panel”
        
         •If your computer shows the “Network and Internet Connections” link as below, click
           it, otherwise move to the next step.

          
     
  3. Double Click on the “Network Connections” icon shown on the page.

  4. One or more network adapter icons show in the panel. Click once on your wireless network connection icon to select it. Once you have selected your wireless connection (highlighted here in blue) click on “View Available Wireless Networks” from the Network Tasks list on the left.


     
  5. When the available networks are displayed, you should see the “PVCC” network name in the panel. Click the PVCC entry to select it, then click the “Connect” button below.



    Your computer will indicate when a successful connection is established.


Registering your computer on our Wireless System
  1. Open Internet Explorer. The registration page will appear:


     
  2. Enter your name in the “User First Name” and “User Last Name” blanks provided.
     
  3. Read the policy statement and scroll down to the accept button. Click “Accept” to acknowledge that you understand the college's Internet policy.


     
  4. When the “Registration Accepted” page appears, close your browser and wait approximately 2 minutes. Reopen your browser and you should see your home page. If not, close your browser, wait another minute or two and reopen your browser.
