By partnering with the Jefferson Area Board for Aging (JABA), PIEDMONT FUTURES brings volunteer tutors into Cale Elementary School. Volunteers tutor the young students in a variety of settings-one-on-one, in reading groups, after school and as teachers' helpers.
Over 40 PVCC students, faculty and staff have served as tutors for the program since 2008. JABA's Friends in Schools Helping (FISH) program provides training and ongoing support for the tutors.
Many PVCC students who volunteer as tutors earn Service Learning Credit for their experience. Some students become tutors to gain experience in the education field; others simply to give back to their community. PVCC employees use Community Service hours to tutor during the work day.
