By partnering with the Jefferson Area Board for Aging (JABA), PIEDMONT FUTURES brings volunteer tutors into Cale Elementary School. Volunteers tutor the young students in a variety of settings-one-on-one, in reading groups, after school and as teachers' helpers.
Twenty-three PVCC students, faculty and staff currently serve as tutors for the program. JABA's Friends in Schools Helping (FISH) program provides training and ongoing support for the tutors.
Many PVCC students who volunteer as tutors earn Service Learning Credit for their experience. Some students become tutors to gain experience in the education field; others simply to give back to their community. PVCC employees use Community Service hours to tutor during the work day.
Tutor trainings for the fall semester will be held at PVCC September 13 and 15 from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m.
