Peer Educator
Shelter for Help in Emergency, PO Box 3013, Charlottesville 22903
Looking for peer educators through a program called Think. Tell. Ask: Teens Taking Action (TTA). TTA is co-sponsored by the Shelter and Planned Parenthood. We want to give our peer educators real, practical information on making healthy decisions for relationships and sexuality, and we want to train you to share this information with your peers (that's why it's called peer education). We want you to have good solid knowledge about sexuality and relationships and to feel comfortable sharing it with other kids, to improve the health and happiness of your community. Because this is a paid, professional position, we expect you to go through a lengthy training (40-50 hours), meeting once (or occasionally twice) a week during Fall Semester, and then plan and carry out a designated number of trainings yourselves during Spring Semester. You will also be required to intervene with and educate your peers on an informal basis a designated number of times over the course of your internship; give peers good information whenever you overhear bad information. Last but not least, the peer educators as a group will work over the Spring (and maybe Summer) to create a large, multimedia project for community education. If you are concerned about these issues and concerned for your peers, willing to think hard and work hard, interested in being a leader and a resource, committed to taking on responsibilities and to giving your time and energy, this position is for you! There will be a lot of learning and thinking on the job, so be ready!
