Commonwealth Scholars uses business leaders to motivate students to complete a rigorous course of study in high school-one that will give them a boost in college and in their career. PIEDMONT FUTURES sends business leaders into 8th-grade classes to challenge students. Speakers find the experience rewarding as they share their own career path as well as facts about the workforce of the future.
For each year of high school, students can enroll in the Commonwealth Scholars required courses. (See Commonwealth Scholars Course of Study & Brochure) In addition to the core academic program, college and career planning activities are offered throughout the high school years to help students focus in on a career goal and give them the knowledge to fulfill that goal. Students can work with their high school career coach, career specialist or school counselor to plan their Commonwealth Scholars high school schedule and to learn about career development opportunities. Commonwealth Scholars is operated by the Virginia Community College System with leadership from Piedmont Virginia Community College.
Business professionals who volunteer attend a one-hour training session on how to give the Commonwealth Scholars presentation. The PowerPoint presentation, recently revised based on feedback from business representatives and students, gives students important information about career pathways, lifestyle choices and budgeting. Real-life stories about career and education, shared by the presenters, add a personal touch and make the message real to students.
