Career Scholars engages business and industry leaders to motivate students to complete a more rigorous course of study in high school - one that will give them a boost in college and in their career. PIEDMONT FUTURES sends business leaders into 8th-grade classes to challenge students to consider their educational and career options. Speakers find the experience rewarding as they share their own career path as well as facts about the workforce of the future.
Professionals who volunteer to serve as speakers attend a one-hour training session on how to give the Career Scholars PowerPoint presentation. The presentation gives students important information about career pathways, lifestyle choices and budgeting. Real-life stories about education and careers, shared by the presenters, add a personal touch and make the message real to students.
Career Scholars was adapted from the Commonwealth Scholars program operated by the Virginia Community College System with leadership from Piedmont Virginia Community College. With the discontinuation of the program in Spring 2011, the presentation was modified to continue to meet the needs of students in the PVCC service region. A group from Leadership Charlottesville Class of '12 further updated the program to reflect regional workforce needs in Spring 2012.
