General Statement

Piedmont Virginia Community College is seeking a skilled and knowledgeable individual to serve as PVCC’s E-Learning Specialist. The E-Learning Specialist is the college’s Blackboard (Bb) System Administrator. This position is responsible for continued ease of operation of all aspects of the Bb course management system (including, but not limited to preparation of course shells each semester, student enrollment into Bb course sections and instruction for faculty and students in the use of the system). The E-Learning Specialist will assist researching new instructional technology and software applications and provide support in the Center for Excellence in Instruction for faculty and staff. In addition, the E-Learning Specialist serves as a “backup” to the Center for Excellence in Instruction Coordinator in providing instruction and support in the use of selected instructional technologies required as part of the learning experience and as “backup” to the college’s webmaster.

Duties and Responsibilities

Blackboard System Administrator: 

  • Manage daily the Blackboard (Bb) Academic Suite, including the Learning System, Community System, and the Content System.

  • Create, copy, archive courses on Bb (All classes offered at PVCC have a Bb space).

  • Create all organizational clubs or committees on Bb.

  • Enroll all students and faculty at the beginning of the semester.

  • Troubleshoot Bb faculty and student issues throughout the semester.

  • Provide one-on-one Bb training to faculty.

  • Provide large student class orientations at the beginning of the semester.

  • Manage all Bb announcements and email notifications.

  • Monitor VCCS Discuss for updates/changes/problems.

  • Keep current with Bb trends, issues, and updates.

  • Participate in VCCS Bb SysAdmin trainings and meetings.

Faculty/Staff Support in Center for Excellence in Instruction (CEI):

  • Provide technical support for faculty and staff in using available technology in the Center through scheduled or walk-in appointments.

  • Maintain and update hardware and software in the CEI.

  • Maintain daily administrative operations of the CEI.

Compressed Video and Web Conferencing:

  • Maintain currency in field of compressed video technology and receive ongoing training as needed.

  • Ensure connectivity for all conferences and classes.

  • Coordinate multipoint conferences.

  • Provide technical support for classroom.

  • Assist faculty and staff with document preparation to use in web conferencing classes.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Serve as "back-up_ to the college web master.

  • May be assigned other technological responsibilities required to support instruction.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Associates degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience, in telecommunications, instructional technology, information systems, or a computer-related field.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Excellent organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in telecommunications, instructional technology, information systems or a computer-related field.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Computer/programming experience; web page maintenance experience; ability to communicate complex ideas to a novice audience.

Approximate Salary Maximum:  $38,000
