General Statement:

 

Piedmont Virginia Community College is searching for a fulltime Emergency Medical Services program coordinator. This position is a nine-month faculty appointment with teaching and administrative duties in the EMS Associates Degree program.

 

Duties and Responsibilities (essential functions of the job):

  • Teach lecture/lab/clinical courses as assigned, such as:
    • EMS core courses- medical, trauma, pharmacology
  • Coordinate student clinical experiences and field internships.
  • Work with colleagues to create new courses/curricula and enhance current courses/curriculum to meet the needs of EMS employers.
  • Work with community health care organizations to sustain and enhance the profession.
  • Market and recruit for the program, promote degree option.
  • Coordinate and work with adjunct faculty.
  • Serve as liaison between the college and the health care community.
  • Work with health science coordinator and division dean in administration of program to ensure continued accreditation.

 

Teaching

 

  • Teach each semester as assigned – may include day and evening sections, on- and off-campus, weekends, and distance learning technologies.
  • Ensure all didactic and skills lab content are presented to the students in an appropriate manner.
  • Maintain 10 office hours weekly.
  • Prepare and review annually a course of study for each course taught.
  • Prepare and distribute to all students a syllabus consistent with the course of study for each course taught.
  • Prepare grade reports for each course taught.
  • Recommend appropriate texts and support materials for each course taught.
  • Assist in requisition of adequate instructional equipment and supplies.
  • Regularly review library collection within faculty discipline.
  • Evaluate course instruction in accordance with established policy.

Program Administration  

  • Screen program applicants in collaboration with division dean.
  • Review and revise program admission criteria as needed.
  • Work with clinical coordinator to secure clinical practicums with hospital sites.
  • Secure clinical site agreements with agencies.
  • Ensure all students meet clinical agency requirements such as  fire & safety, confidentiality, CPR.
  • Annually coordinate national registry testing process for graduates.
  • Develop/maintain all records and documents required by CoARC/CoEMSP.
  • Meet with Advisory Board at least twice each year.
  • Collaborate with division dean to establish program budget needs.
  • Collaborate with PVCC staff to develop, implement, and evaluate a program marketing strategy.

 

Advising:

 

  • Advise program students in course selection and curricular requirements.
  • Maintain attendance records and confer with students who display excessive absenteeism or an inclination to withdraw from a course.
  • Confer with students who display poor academic performance or lack of compliance with affective objectives of the paramedic curriculum.
  • Participate when applicable and practical in co-curricular activities.

 

Professional development:

 

  • Prepare and implement a professional development plan in cooperation with the appropriate dean each year.
  • Maintain a positive, professional relationship with colleagues, supervisors, students, and the community.

 

Additional Activities:

 

  • Participate in divisional meetings, and serve actively on divisional committees and college-wide committees.
  • Attend faculty workshops.
  • Prepare textbook orders as required.
  • Serve as an active member of at least one college committee.
  • Assist in maintaining an up-to-date inventory of equipment assigned for use in instruction.
  • Work with colleagues to promote retention of students.
  • Incorporate current and emerging instructional technologies into classroom instruction.
  • Work with colleagues to secure external financial and/or physical resources  (e.g., grant writing, equipment).
  • Adhere to policies, procedures, and regulations of the college and the Virginia Community College System.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required:

 

  • Current certification as a nationally-registered paramedic (NREMT-P)
  • Associates degree in Emergency Medical Services or related field from a regionally accredited institution of higher education.
  • At least five years recent ALS field experience in the delivery of out-of-hospital patient care and currently an active member in a volunteer or career agency
  • Commitment to the community college mission and philosophy, students, and teaching in a community college.
  • Knowledgeable about methods of instruction, testing and evaluation of students.
  • Knowledgeable of current national curricula, national accreditation, national registration, and the requirements for state certification or licensure.
  • Commitment to academic advisement of students.
  • Evidence of on-going professional development to assure currency in field.
  • Willingness to be flexible in response to changing circumstances and needs such as:
    • teaching at times and locations other than the traditional campus and schedule
    • supervising students in various clinical and field settings
    • exploring and using current and emerging technologies and methodologies in instruction and distance learning

 

Desirable:

 

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with at least 18 graduate hours in a related field (EMS, science, nursing, physician assistant).
  • Virginia EMT instructor certification.
  • CPR, ACLS, PALS, BTLS instructor certifications.
  • Prior experience:
    • Adult education in an academic setting
    • Clinical and field experience in multiple settings
    • Using current electronic instructional technologies (e.g., multimedia, Internet)
    • Using current simulation technologies
    • Developing and teaching in distance learning technologies
    • Developing courses/curriculum
    • Securing external financial and/or physical resources  (e.g., grant writing, equipment)

Salary and Benefits:

Salary for nine-month faculty shall be in accordance with VCCS policy and commensurate with qualifications.  Approximate maximum of $56,000.
