Grants do not have to be repaid. They are awarded according to financial need. After you apply for financial aid and file the FASFA, PVCC's Financial Aid Office will automatically determine if you qualify for grants and will indicate this in your financial aid award letter.
Federal Pell Grant:
Pell Grants are need-based federal student aid. Only undergraduate students who have not yet earned a bachelor's degree are eligible for this grant. The Pell Grant is awarded using your family's Expected Family Contribution (EFC) as determined by the FAFSA. Awards are also based on the number of credit hours you take.
Academic Competitiveness Grant:
This federal, need-based financial aid program awards up to $750 for the first year of undergraduate study and up to $1,300 for the second year of undergraduate study to full-time students who are U.S. citizens. You must meet eligibility requirements for a Federal Pell Grant and have successfully completed a rigorous high school program, as determined by the state or local education agency and recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education. If you are a second-year student, you must have maintained a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0. The Academic Competitiveness Grant is awarded in addition to a Pell Grant award. Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant:
If you are enrolled for at least six credit hours per semester and demonstrate extreme financial need, you may be eligible for this grant. Preference is given to Pell Grant recipients with the lowest Expected Family Contribution.
College Scholarship Assistance Program:
You must enroll for at least six credit hours, be a resident of Virginia and demonstrate extreme financial need to be considered for this program. These funds are extremely limited.
Commonwealth Award Grant:
If you enroll for six or more credit hours per semester, are a resident of Virginia and demonstrate financial need, you may be eligible for this state grant. These funds are limited.
Part-time Tuition Assistance Program Grant:
If you enroll for one to six credit hours per semester, are a resident of Virginia and demonstrate financial need, you may be eligible for this state grant. The maximum award is the cost of tuition.
Virginia Guaranteed Assistance Program Grant:
This state grant is available to first-time freshmen who graduated from a Virginia high school with at least a 2.5 GPA. You must be enrolled full time and considered a dependent student. If you maintain full-time enrollment, have at least a 2.0 GPA and continue to demonstrate financial need, your award may be renewed for a second year.
Community College Transfer Grant:
Eligible PVCC graduates with a transfer degree can apply for a Community College Transfer Grant to be applied to tuition at a four-year college or university. PVCC students must complete a transfer associate degree with a 3.0 grade point average and meet financial eligibility requirements. The grant will be applied directly to tuition expenses at a four-year Virginia College or university, either public or private. The grant provides $1,000 for all eligible students, with an extra $1,000 for students who pursue undergraduate work in engineering, mathematics, technology, nursing, teaching or science. Students may be eligible for up to three years of grant assistance.
