PVCC provides educational opportunities for qualifying veterans and eligible dependents of veterans, as well as National Guard, selected reserve and active-duty military personnel. All associate degree programs, certificates and career studies certificates (credit programs) at PVCC are approved by the Virginia Department of Education for the payment of veterans' educational benefits as allowed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
Workforce (Noncredit) certificates and classes are not eligible for payment of veterans' educational benefits. See Programs of Study for more details about credit and workforce (noncredit) programs at PVCC.
If you are a veteran, reservist or eligible dependent, in order to be reimbursed for your coursework at PVCC you will have to pay tuition and fees at the time of class registration and submit the appropriate documentation. Follow the enrollment and the reimbursement steps below.
Types of Benefits
To find out what specific educational benefits you may be eligible to receive, please call the information service at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) at 800.827.1000 or 888.442.4551. Enrollment Steps for Veterans, Reservists or Eligible Dependents
- Apply to PVCC. After completing your online application, you will receive an EmplID number on the confirmation page. Please have this number available as you complete the registration process.
- Apply for financial aid if you are pursuing a degree or certificate program. All students are encouraged to apply for financial aid. You may apply for financial aid at any time, but the best time to apply is in the early spring of the year you will begin at PVCC.
- Send us your official transcripts and any service branch transcripts if you plan to pursue a degree or certificate at PVCC. PVCC will review your transcripts to determine possible PVCC credit for your completed college work. Reviewing transcripts can take weeks so please send your transcripts early. If you do not submit your transcripts in time, an unofficial transcript can be used for advisement purposes only. PVCC will continue to review your official transcript as soon as possible.

Reimbursement Steps for Veterans, Reservists or Eligible Dependents
To receive reimbursement from the VA for your paid tuition and fees, the VA requires that each semester PVCC officially verify or certify that you successfully enrolled in the coursework for your chosen degree or certificate. After you have registered and paid for your classes each semester, make an appointment with PVCC's Veteran Affairs Specialist so that this process can begin. You may Email, call 434.961.6550 or visit the Welcome Center in PVCC's Main Building to make the appointment. See the Reimbursement Steps, below.
Be sure to complete and bring the following documents, if applicable, to this appointment:
- If you are new to PVCC but have previously used veteran education benefits at another school, complete a request for change of program or place of training form (VA 22-1995).
- If you are using veterans educational benefits for the first time, also submit the following:
- An application for education benefits (VA 22-1990)
- An original or court-certified copy of discharge papers (page 4 of this DD-214)
- An application for Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance, if applicable (VA 22-5490)
- A copy of your PVCC class schedule
- Your tuition payment receipt
- If you are not using veterans educational benefits for the first time, also submit the following:
- A copy of your PVCC class schedule
- Your tuition payment receipt
After receiving all of the required paperwork noted above and after the semester's final deadline for tuition refunds has passed, PVCC will formally certify your enrollment with the VA so that you can be reimbursed for your paid tuition and fees.
At the end of each month it is the responsibility of the Veteran to report the number of credits he/she is taking to Veterans Affairs either by telephone or the Internet. If the Veteran fails to contact Veterans Affairs he/she will not receive any payment for that month.
