Students who are not planning to complete a degree or certificate may start at step 1 and continue to step 8. Please be aware that if you are choosing to take a math or English class you will be required to complete step 5.

checkbox Step 3:  Apply for financial aid.
We encourage all degree and certificate-seeking students to apply for financial aid. Financial aid may come in the form of grants, scholarships, loans and work-study positions. The first step is to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) online at FAFSA. Apply anytime. Visit Financial Aid for more information.

checkbox Step 4:  Send official transcripts.
This is only necessary if you want to receive credit for previously completed college coursework obtained outside the Virginia Community College System. Only students entering nursing or other allied health programs need to send high school transcripts. Please complete the Transcript Evaluation Request Form (or contact the Admissions & Advising Center for this form) and send this form and all transcripts to the address below. If you attended another Virginia Community College and want to receive transfer credit, all we need is your completed Transcript Evaluation Request Form. See instructions on the form.

checkbox Step 5:  Take placement assessments.
Students planning to pursue a degree at PVCC that require math or English courses must take placement assessments. These assessments are given in the Learning Center located in room M607 in the Main Building. There is no charge. Visit Tutoring & Learning for testing hours.

You can prepare for the exam with sample test questions by visiting www.act.org/compass/sample/index.html.

Exemptions for the assessment include:

  • SAT scores of at least 520 in math and English
  • ACT scores (consult with Academic Advisor)
  • Successful completion of college-level math or English within the last three years
  • English and math AP test scores of three or higher

checkbox Step 6:  Meet with an advisor to finalize your academic plan.
Advisors will evaluate assessment results and help you choose appropriate classes. Call the Admissions & Advising Center at 434.961.5264 or e-mail counseling@pvcc.edu to schedule an appointment. Also, if you are a student with a documented disability requiring classroom accommodations, please inform the administrative assistant when calling.

Tuition can be paid online through MyPVCC or may be paid at the Cashier's Office located in room M237 in PVCC's Main Building.

Tuition and Fees
Effective fall 2010, Virginia residents pay $110.65 per credit hour and out-of-state residents pay $304.25 per credit hour, which includes a student activity fee of $1.40 per credit hour, an institutional fee of $1.75 per credit hour and a technology fee of $6.50 per credit hour.
