The enrollment process for students planning to complete a degree or certificate at PVCC involves a series of steps and decisions that are necessary to ensure your success as a student. The steps below have been designed to help you with this process.

Students who are not planning to complete a degree or certificate may start at step 1 and continue to step 7. Please be aware that if you are choosing to take a math or English class you will be required to complete step 5.

checkbox Step 1:  Submit an application to PVCC.

Apply online now. After completing your application to PVCC, you will receive a student ID number and user name on your confirmation page. Please be sure to print this page or write down this information.

checkbox Step 2:  Attend a "Getting Started" Workshop or make an appointment with an Admissions Advisor.

checkbox Step 3:  Apply for financial aid.
We encourage all degree and certificate-seeking students to apply for financial aid. Financial aid may come in the form of grants, scholarships, loans and work-study positions. The first step is to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) online at FAFSA. To obtain your maximum eligibility, it is best to complete the FAFSA prior to March 31 of the attending year, but you may apply after this date, too. Visit Financial Aid for more information.

checkbox Step 4:  Send official transcripts.
This is only necessary if you want to receive credit for previously completed coursework obtained outside the Virginia Community College System. Send to:

Only students entering the allied health programs (i.e. nursing, surgical tech. and emergency medical services) need to send high school transcripts.


checkbox Step 5:  Take placement assessments.
Students planning to pursue a degree at PVCC that require math or English courses must take placement assessments. These assessments are given in the Learning Center located in room 607 in the Main Building. There is no charge. Visit Tutoring & Learning for testing hours.

You can prepare for the exam with sample test questions by visiting www.act.org/compass/sample/index.html.

Exemptions for the assessment include:

  • SAT scores of at least 520 in math and English
  • ACT scores (consult with Academic Advisor)
  • Successful completion of college-level math or English within the last three years
  • English and math AP test scores of three or higher

checkbox Step 6:  Meet with a counselor to finalize your academic plan.
Counselors will evaluate assessment results and help you choose appropriate classes. Call the Counseling Center at 434.961.5264 or e-mail counseling@pvcc.edu to schedule an appointment. Also, if you are a student with a documented disability requiring classroom accomodations, please inform the administrative assistant when calling.

checkbox Step 7:  Register for classes online using MyPVCC.
checkbox Step 8:  Pay for your classes.
Tuition can be paid online through MyPVCC or may be paid at the Cashier's Office located in room 237 in PVCC's Main Building.

Tuition and Fees
Effective Spring 2010, Virginia residents pay $102.65 per credit hour, and out-of-state residents pay $284.75 per credit hour. The tuition includes a student activity fee of $1.40 per credit hour, an institutional fee of $1.25 cents per credit hour and a technology fee of $5.50 per credit hour.
