Dual Enrollment Admission Requirements

To be eligible for the Dual Enrollment Program a student must:

  1. Be a junior or senior in high school. (Exceptional freshmen and sophomores will be considered for participation on an individual basis. You and your parent(s) must get permission from the school system and from the PVCC President. Please contact your school counselor.)
  2. Demonstrate college readiness (normally done through the Virginia Placement Test (VPT) or SAT/ACT scores-see below).
  • Students interested in taking dual enrollment classes that commonly transfer to four-year institutions (e.g., English, history, psychology, etc.) must place into ENG 111 on the VPT English test or score 500 or higher on both the critical reading and writing section of the SAT or score of 21 on the English section of the ACT and 19 on the reading section of the ACT or score 52 or higher on the English section of the PSAT. Students must also place into MTE 1 on the VPT math test or pass the algebra I SOL or score 520 or higher on the math section of SAT or 52 of higher on the math section of the PSAT.
  • Students interested in taking dual enrollment classes that could lead to a certificate or associate of applied science degree must place into ENF 2 (English Fundamentals 2) or higher on the VPT English test or meet the minimum standards on the SAT, ACT, or PSAT (see above). Examples of these classes would include computer aided drafting and design, information technology, building trades, horticulture and many others. Some exceptions might apply. Contact the PVCC Dual Enrollment Coordinator with specific concerns. Students must also place into MTE 1 on the VPT math test or pass the algebra I SOL or score 520 or higher on the math section of SAT or 52 of higher on the math section of the PSAT.
  • All students interested in taking dual credit classes (classes taken at PVCC) must meet the requirements for taking transfer classes and must place into ENG 111 on the VPT English test or score 520 or higher on both the critical reading and writing section of the SAT or score of 21 on the English section of the ACT and 19 on the reading section of the ACT or score 52 or higher on the English section of the PSAT. Students must also place into MTE 1 on the VPT math test or pass the algebra I SOL or score 520 or higher on the math section of SAT or 52 of higher on the math section of the PSAT.

     3.  Have your parents' or guardians' permission.
     4.  Have the permission of your high school.
     5.  Meet all prerequisite requirements for each dual enrollment class in which you plan to enroll.
